CURIOUS FILM

Founded in 1999, Curious is an award-winning production company.

With offices in Auckland, Sydney, Queenstown, Singapore and Los Angeles, Curious is a full- service production company with post-production and distribution facilities. Curious is considered one of the most innovative production houses in Asia Pacific and the company represents some of the region's most dynamic commercial and film directors, including academy award nominated director Taika Waititi, director and DOP Darryl Ward and comedy director Robin Walters.

Curious’ commercial production has been awarded the highest accolades in advertising. Work such as the NZTA/Clemenger BBDO commercial Blazed, directed by Taika Waititi, was awarded 2 gold lions and 1 silver lion for Film Craft at the Cannes Lions Festival 2014, and Curious is also responsible for the all star Air New Zealand Safety Video, starring Taika Waititi, Sir Peter Jackson and Elijah Wood, which has had over 14 million views on YouTube and caused a global media storm upon release. In 2010, Darryl Ward’s Orcon campaign with Iggy Pop was the most awarded work of that year, winning locally and internationally, with a Grand Prix at Cannes Lions Festival topping the list of awards.

Curious has been named Production Company of the Year for the Asia Pacific region for the last two years running at the Ciclope International Advertising Craft Festival in Berlin.

Curious-produced short and feature films have been selected for the world's most prestigious film festivals: Cannes, Venice, Sundance and SXSW. Successes include: Turbo Kid (2015), winner of the Midnighters Audience Award at SXSW 2015; Blue (2011), which won the Grand Prix at Cannes Critics Week 2011 and was nominated for the Cannes Discovery Award, as well as the Best Short Film at Brussels International Independent Film Festival 2011; director Zia Mandviwalla’s short film, Night Shift (2012), which premiered at Cannes Film Festival 2012 and Sundance Film Festival 2013; the feature film Desert (2010) premiered at Busan Film Festival 2010, and the feature Fantail (2013) premiered at Rotterdam Film Festival 2014, receiving positive reviews worldwide.

The company currently has a slate of narrative feature, documentaries and television projects in development through to post production. These include: Taika Waititi’s new feature film Hunt For The Wilderpeople shooting in May 2015, visionary filmmaker Pan Nalin's much anticipated Beyond The Known World due mid 2015, the UK/New Zealand co-production Mystery Ride, starring Peter Mullan and Frances O’Connor, is in development, as is the ultra low budget Warm Blood - the searing US feature to be shot by visionary Director of Photography Christopher Blauvelt.

In 2010, Curious established a boutique distribution division seeking out distinctive cinema, innovatively conceived, which directly benefits from a bespoke, focused release and marketing strategy. Curious’ theatrical releases range from Winter’s Bone (2010) to much-loved The Rocket (2013), and most recently, Oscar winner Ida (2013).
